Cleary some ingenuity is called for. I'm not in favour of spending money either. Further, when I think of all the component storage drawers I dumped over the years I have to sit down quietly and take a wee dram. So, earlier this year I had a play.
SWMBO consumes a variety of Weight Watchers' products, including Fromage Frais. That comes in nice little plastic pots, which I asked her to save for me. The pots are about 3" x 2.5" X 2" deep, with nice rounded corners. I intended to put 24 of them into a drawer so that I could store a complete set of E24 resistors or for that matter capacitors. I drew a simple diagram and made a rough box - expert woodworkers look away now, although I'm claiming that this is just the prototype. I then hot-melt glued the pots onto the bottom. Finally, I filled up the gaps with expanding foam, let it set and sliced off where it had stuck out. Interstingly, it didn't stick very well to the pots.
I think it's pretty successful, and when I've got a few more jobs out of the way I'll make some more and a case to put them in. I'm also collecting a variety of other containers for larger components.
