The PSU should be silent most of the time as it's unlikely to be heavily loaded except when the PC is doing heavy work for a long period. The rest is inherently silent, apart from the 1TB HDD I intend to add. Though 1TB SSDs are no longer prohibitive. An example: https://www.ebuyer.com/829682-kingston-a...00s37-960g That's a lot less than I paid for a 500GB SSD a few years ago. You can even have a 2TB SSD for udner £200: https://www.scan.co.uk/shop/computer-har...sata3-ssds
This may be useful on silent laptops: https://www.ultrabookreview.com/6520-fan...ltrabooks/ Depends on how much money you've got and how much CPU grunt you need.
It was the noise from a desktop that I was thinking about as, possibly as much the installation as anything else, desktop fan(s) tend to resonate more. We have a desktop which is less used now but I notice can be rather noisy when doing intensive work. That often prompts me to getting out the vacuum and cleaing out the case and processor heatsink fan / fins (it's amazing how clogged heatsink fins can get after a few months in the average living room).
I must say that my laptop (an Hp Envy) has not been too noisy in the most part; only when updating software does it churn away. I am reasonably happy with it as I bought fairly up-market at the time to replace a work one I would no longer be using. They were steadily getting stricter on home software installation because of security issues and access could obviously be cut at a moments notice. It has an I7 processor and 12GB Ram plus 1TB disc anyway so performance wise it is still good enough for most things. It is just that it is getting old and well used so it's time to be thinking of the future. I do have external hard discs for backup but it would be useful to keep this as a standby and for networked backup which my external disks are not intrinsically enabled for.
Just got to justify the budget
