Incidentally, when looking at SSDs there are 3 main types. Ordinary SATA, usually 2.5" form factor. No mystery here. Then the newer compact M2 form factor. These come in 2 varieties. Some support NVMe and go really fast. Others don't. Here's a guide:

Alan, I wonder why your system has slowed down that much. I'd be very tempted to do a clean instal to clear out all the muckage that's accumulated over the years. For the cost of a new SSD I might just get a new one and keep the old one so you don't need to back up its contents beforehand. A new 500GB SSD can be bought for £50 or so.
