I've just ordered a new PC. This will be my new main PC and will run Linux Mint. Existing main PC is over 5 years old and runs W7 so time for some kind of upgrade. I prefer to leave my old PC "as is" when upgrading as occasionally I've had to refer back, despite best efforts at backup. It's usually because of some awkward software that never got installed on the new PC because it was difficult.
After doing research online I decided to have it custom built by these guys: www.computerplanet.co.uk
I'd rather not build my own. It's worth my while to have somebody else do the odds and sods of assembly.
The most demanding thing I do is Xilinx FPGAs. The tools want plenty of CPU and RAM but nothing exceptional for graphics. So I've gone for 32GB of fast RAM and a top rated M2 SSD drive. I will fit an extra 1TB “spinning rust” HDD for data. I've gone for a nice quality PSU.
Main spec:
CPU: Intel i7 9700K - (8 x 3.7 GHZ - Turbo 8 x 4.9 GHZ) - Coffee Lake
CPU Cooling: Arctic Cooling Freezer 12 - Low Noise
Motherboard: Asus PRIME Z390-P (Intel Z390) - 4xUSB 3.1/2xUSB 2.0
RAM: Corsair 32GB Vengeance LPX 3000MHz (2x16GB)
Graphics Card: NVIDIA GeForce GT 710 - 2 GB
SSD: 512GB ADATA SX8200 PRO M.2 SSD, Read 3500MB/s, Write 2300MB/s
Power Supply: Corsair RMx 650W (Modular) PSU - Low Noise / Silent
Total cost a fraction over £1K.
