Seemed to be deteriorating further today. Finally found what I thought was my emergency router, a Plusnet Hub 1, but couldn't get it to work. Wasn't preprared to spend much time and effort on it.
Found that PC Hell had the TP-Link Archer VR400 in stock locally, only £2 more expensive than Amazon, so a short trip was in order. Now installed and working. Keeping the old one as a plausible emergency spare. Will look inside one day to see if any bulging caps.
There are times when it's worth spending time and effort, others when the right answer is money. WIthout digging out old paper invoices I can't be sure when I bought the old modem/router but 2015 seems likely. Not a wonderful lifetime but I won't complain too much.
