There are transparent grades of epoxy (such as are used for clear LED's) which are transparent and thermosetting. Not saying that this is what EKCO used originally, in fact probably not - but shows that the stuff exists!
Transparent plastics tend to be less tough than opaque. They obviously can't have any fillers in, because that would destroy the optical clarity. But particles of filler act to stop crack propagation when the material is stressed, which is what makes composite materials tough. Remove the filler, and any cracks which start, just carry on right through.
