It's now hard to remember a time when 405 line TV enthusiasts had real problems feeding their sets with pictures. It's over 25 years since the Dinosaur and Pineapple converters unlocked those sets for the many. The Aurora SCRF goes back more than half that time, to 2006, and made it trvially easy to run a 405 line set. Over 800 have been sold so far. The vast majority in the 405 line version (others are available, from 819 down to 30) and the vast majority in the UK.
The Hedghog is a newcomer. It's performance is more or less equivalent to an Aurora. The design is partially open source too.
If you're contemplating getting a 625 to 405 converter, there has never been a better time. The Aurora is still available, though one wonders how long it will be before manufacture becomes uneconomic. I know that demand has dropped in recent years, presumably the market is becoming saturated. So get your orders in now.
Stephen Evans in Cornwall will make a Hedghog for you if you don't fancy doing it yourself. I think he charges £150.
Secondhand converters? The Dinosaur, Pineapple and Domino were all commercially available in their time and occasionally come up for sale on ebay etc. They are all good units though the Dino is the best. The Pineapple suffered from some niggling problems and the Domino's video bandwidth left something to be desired. Only the Domino had a modulator as standard. All of them perfectly usable if one turns up cheaply but I'd rather have an Aurora or Hedghog.
