It seems that for what I want, I am about twenty years too late(!) as most of the RDS decoding chips required are obsolete...
I found on-line references to SAA6579 / SAA6581 (Philips) and TDA7330B (ST)
Some people have managed to do what I had in mind but have either not shared their code or else used now-obsolete microcontrollers...

Michael, I have to admit that some of your reply was 'over-my-head' : although I would be interested to know which particular PIC and RDS chip you used in your project, so I can check on current availability.
It appears that things have moved on and that available modern IC's like the Silicon-Labs Si4703 'all-in-one' chip (as Jim has mentioned) will not do what I want due to their high integration.
Also, I don't know how good the audio quality of these DSP based devices is ..
