Hofstadter was a student of Daniel Dennett, who's book "Consciousness Explained". Another excellent read.
Apparently, although we think of decisions and actions as immediate, the brain is gearing up between 1/3 and 1/2 a second before.
There is an excellent TED talk by Dennett: "Philosopher Dan Dennett makes a compelling argument that not only don't we understand our own consciousness, but that half the time our brains are actively fooling us." https://www.ted.com/talks/dan_dennett_on...en#t-30176
