The fact that (old)carbon composition resistors may be hygroscopic may well be relevant in this case, since the 114 had suffered ingress of water, mainly around where the power and speaker leads exit the chassis. The 560 ohm resistor is mounted fairly close to this point, so, though there is no evidence of water damage on the PCB at the resistor's position, moisture could have penetrated it in the past.
