Amie is right. There's no such thing as an inherently AC LED. It's a diode and so will pass current on alternate half cycles. Because LEDs have a low maximum reverse voltage the supply must be rectified. This can be done with 2 LEDs in inverse parallel or by placing the LED on the DC side of a bridge rectifier.
