Well I've been using Linux for a very long time now. Started initially with Ubuntu and now Mint Mate 19.2. Linux is hard to break, you'd need to do something quite silly to get to that stage. Don't run before you walk that's my advice. Use the software manager to install new programs initially until you get the feel of things. sudo apt-get is useful and again shouldn't give you any issues. Copy your home folder and hidden files onto a spare HDD and you can then paste them into a new installation if you really mess up. Doing it this way keeps mail and everything intact.
