I only barely understand a lot of what you've written. I guess it will become clearer as I try things and break them. This is what I mean about experienced people not knowing what it's like to be a beginner. I've got enough knowledge to search around questions but sometimes I don't quite know how to word the question.
For example I will want to bring all my own files across to the Linux system. At present they're on the D: drive which also happens to be a physically separate HDD. I probably want to continue using a separate HDD but don't want an NTFS drive on a Linux system. So presumably I copy the entire folder structure across to an ext4 formatted HDD, either in the same PC or via network. Need to work out where it should live in the Linux folders.
I'll be building a test system for Linux where I can try and break things without impacting my main PC. A priority is getting Xilinx tools working. If i use a VM, then it's just downloading the package installer (I've already got it locally which save a few GB of download) and running it in the VM. Not at all sure about how you do it in Wine.
