Not to mention the W8/W8.1 fiasco.
At the moment I don't yet know how to isntall multiple desktops in Linux, nor how to switch between them. There are lots of simple things I need to learn. My PC computing dates back to DOS and W3. So I'm conversant with command line and have written many simple batch files, some of which I still use. I'll need to explore the Linux command line. I already know ls because I used a version of it with Windows for many years. I don't know how you write the equivalent a batch file and make it executable.
I suspect I need a Linux 101 type of book or online tutorial. Those who have been using Linux for years (or anything else for that matter) may not even recognise what are obvious questions to a beginner.
In any case, I'll try Linux on a separate PC to get familiar with it. Want something with decent speed. I've found an old HP whose processor gets a Passmark of 2373. For comparison my main PC is 9068 and its predecessor was 2947. There's one other possible PC which I'll look at. I know that CPU performance isn't everything. RAM, graphics and HDD make a big difference. I've got a spare 500GB SSD so Linux can go on that to give it a speed boost. My main PC's C drive is also a 500GB SSD.

I'd forgotten about WINE. Looks like it runs Irfanview OK if I want to stay with that. Other stuff to sort out will include 8051 support (I use MIDE-51 for the small amount of work I do with x51 code), a file comaprison utility like WinMerge and doubtless a load of other things I don't use very often. Looking online, there's a good chance that my Xilinx tools will run under WINE rather than having to use a VM
