We might never have had CRTs.

CRTs are also Victorian and the cold cathode type came before Triodes. LEDs and Transistors also have pre WWII origins. The success and cheapness (automated production by 1938) of valves and poor purity of materials held back semiconductors.
The main difficulty with electronic TV was never the display, but the camera. Both Baird's and Farnsworth's approaches were a dead end. Obviously the electron gun solved addressing a display screen or camera target. A device using separate plasma cells (display) or photocells (camera) was totally impractical without transistors and really ICs. It was ICs that made dotmatrix LCDs viable and for larger panels with more resolution and better viewing angle you need the amorphous transistors on the glass substrate.
George William Gray didn't come up with the idea, but he was the first to have a viable system.

The last 40 to 60 years hasn't seen much new science in electronics, it's more about viable materials and better production engineering. OLED have more in common with 1960s & 1970s EL panels than normal LEDs.
