2.5" of ribbon cable might be a problem:
1) Mount on big heatsink.
2) Solder the two resistors direct to pins with short leads, esp between O/P and adjust.
3) Add 3 x 10nF ceramic on i/p, adjust and o/p to the resistor going to adjust pin. Short leads.
The layout page discusses that inductance is a problem, hence a PCB layout given.
4) Then add four long wires as you like, with the two diodes and maybe a 47uF cap to adjust pin. Wires to VIn, Vout, Adjust and 0V (common of the 3 x 10nF caps and the 2nd voltage setting resistor.
5) The 10,000 to 50,000 uF smoothing cap close to bridge and then longer wires from the cap (0V and to Vin). So charging spikes in short wires.
No extra cap on output.
