Ill redesign the circuit, and test again.
Is it best to keep everything close as possible to the IC pins?
I had the IC mounted remotely on a 2.5 inch length of ribbon cable.
This is the circuit I used, from the National Semiconductor 1998 data sheet, pretty standard stuff, but I added a protection diode across the in and out pins.
As I said earlier the circuit worked very well with a LM317T.
Where else would you suggest adding decoupling, from the ADJ pin to ground?
