I would second that about the LM338 being fussy about layout. I recently tried to make a PSU with a large external heatsink, but couldn't get the current from it, until abandoning that idea and mounting close to the relevant circuit. I have just checked mine as I thought I bought them not so long ago from RS. I had forgotten I had bought LM317's and LM337's. My LM338's are from an order some considerable time ago and were from Rapid. They do show similar markings (not the same batch code if that's what it is) to the fake one above.
