Some locomotive classes were rebuilt in pre-BR days so who is to say that, if he hadn't died in 1941 and the second world war hadn't intervened, that Gresley himself might not have brought his own design up to date? After all, it was rebuilt as an A3 shortly after the end of the war.
He'd already designed 1,500VDC locomotives so wasn't firmly entrenched in the past, so who's to say?
What would be wrong would be to repaint FS in LNER livery with its 4472 number and those smoke deflectors although, if they were removed, I think most folk would excuse the double chimney.
