For me the interest is purely historic. I don't doubt that its performance is improved just like the performance of an old television is improved by replacing the innards with a modern colour chassis but it's not for me.

I think your analogy is a bit extreme - the improvements to FS were carried out whilst it was still in service, in much the same way as upgrades were made to many locomotives during their service lives. Replacing the innards of a TV with a modern chassis would be comparable to replacing the steam parts of a locomotive with traction motors and a pantograph!!!
