So I give in and got a 405-line TV in the form of a Sony 9-90UB.
I was curious to see how well it worked, and it seems to be quite reasonable.
I noticed that the two interlaced fields where misaligned by one line, this is fixed now.
The only major issue is no sound, which I can't be sure isn't a fault with the TV.
For those who have tried hacktv before, did you get sound?
Other than the extremely loud 10.125kHz tone at least :-)
