Thanks, Hugh, for that info. In the meantime, I still don't know why the replacement bulb (a GE250W/24V Halogen ELC one) failed. What happened is that the bulb glowed very brightly for a short time than failed. It appears to have overheated & shrunk. I found some notes from when I last repaire the same lighting unit back in Autumn 2012, and, among other things, suitable bulb types are given as 'Dichoric 24v 250w 64653GZ 5.3',(LEK0033) or Osram Halogen 64657 G.6.35(LEK0034). AFAIK, the GE one I fitted should be an equivalent, though I haven't checked. It was supplied by a long-established local electrical retailer, so should be a genuine GE item. As there is no lens over the bulb, I could have accidentally touched the bulb itself when fitting it, though I don't think so. Maybe I should just buy another bulb and fit it, once I've checked as per Boater Sam's advice? The bulb has darkened inside near the top end.
