It's much easier to simply buy an 8 way splitter. It will work better too as there will be better isolation between the outputs.
It will not strain anything whatever you do to the outputs of a splitter. Anything from open circuit to short circuit. But don't stick mains up one of the outputs!
In theory, if you're not using all the outputs, you should terminate the unused outputs with 75R resistors. Then the output levels will be the same under all circumstances. WIth a commercial 8 way splitter this hardly matters, omitting a termination will make very little difference. With a home built one it matters a bit more, levels will vary rather more, but nothing will be damaged.
If you decide to build your own, there are various resistor values that will do the job. For example 22R ins series with each output and 62R to the input will work.
For 8 outputs and a commercial splitter you don't need an amplifier to run 8 sets from an Aurora or Hedghog converter. If you're using other sources of 405 signals this may not apply.
Not sure why you want to use BNC conenctors. Nothing wrong with them a such but not common for this sort of job. The standard conenctor for most low power RF distribution systems is F. Then adapt to whatever your sets have as their aerial inputs.
What do you mean by "broadcast quality cable"? For RF distributions systems the usual choice is CT100 or similar. Webro WF100 is ideal.
