There were already large numbers of 405-line TVs in use in the areas that BBC and IBA transmissions could be received, either from Wales or Ulster and it was to be expected that this would continue so it made sense to use the same 625-line system as the UK as it was obvious by then that the days of 405 were numbered although, of course, UHF transmissions, after 405 closed down would have served a much smaller part of the population.
Likewise, there was also the probability that there would be a demand for Telefis Eireann in the north, so common standards worked both ways.
