The oscillator is free running and the frequency doesn't seem to be set to any critical value. However, the demodulator is fussy about the type of valves used. My Baird T23 employs a similar sound receiver but the demodulator will not work with an FC4 octode. A Marconi-Osram MX40 pentagrid valve works best in that set.
