The difference between PAL I and PAL B/G is so small that I doubt if there was any significant market protection. I think that strictly speaking, Ireland adopted PAL I before the UK did but I can't imagine they would have dine so unless they knew that the UK would use PAL I. I don't think they would have wanted a Belgian style multistandard problem in the Emerald Isle.
