Some people are more cautious than others about plugging in old sets. The late Gerry Wells used to plug stuff in and nothing ever seemed to go seriously bang. John Wakely(many of us know him) is also a "real man" and gives a full dose of mains to almost any unknown set. Conversely some of us are devout cowards and sed variacs and/or lamp limiters to give sets a gentle wake up call.
