What happened was that shortly after I switched my ISP an unstoppable direct debit appeared on my credit card account.
The ISP should have done a one off check as part of setting up my new account.
The hackers must have set up an account with Equifax to resell there services for commission and then just put the direct debits on loads of accounts owned by people whom had no need for the service. It was something like 15 quid a month and I do not need it as it is only every several years that I need anything new that requires a credit check and in any case the provider does in on my behalf as a one off.
My bank got my money back but it did take a couple of long phone calls and a lot of elevator music to sort it out.
I use a pre-paid credit card for traders in the far east and Russia so that large amounts of money can't get nicked off me.
