Looks like Kevin/McMurdo's problem was a false alarm. The first DVD he used was undoubtedly providing some kind of non-standard output. This might be obvious on a 'scope or even on an ordinary PAL monitor. Possibilities include output set to NTSC or to progressive scan. I would tend to blame the player rather than the disc but could easily be wrong.
