Hi Andy, sorry if you are confused!
First, the page numbering: 'The article starts on page 111 of the pdf - actual magazine page number is 189'.
The pdf contains 192 pages. WW used two page numbering sequences - one for editorial content and another with an 'a' prefix for the massive amount of advertising they carried in those days. The editorial page numbering started at 1 in the first issue of each 12 month volume and continued over the full 12 issues, whereupon it started from 1 again. Hence, as you say, this issue starts at page 149 (148, really, the contents page).
However, a pdf reader can't read the page numbers but it can count the number of pages. If you use an Adobe pdf reader it will show you that the pdf contains 192 pages and which of these you are viewing so that you can quickly scroll down to the 111th page to find the one you want.
Regarding dynamic range and the problems caused by speaker inefficiency, these are explained very clearly in the article.
As for 'tongue in cheek', might I respectfully refer you to the month of publication and the author's name?
And would the lass on page a40 not be welcome to come round and play your records?
