I find the radio circuit confusing to say the least, especially around the switches.

What's probably confusing is that the oscillator isn't the usual Reinartz type, it's more akin to the Armstrong type, the switchery in the schematic is reasonably straight forward, the switch positions for the wave change are shown and the position of the switch in the schematic is stated (UKW)

LW and MW have  separate inductors for the tuned winding for RF and Osc and also separate inductors for the feedback winding (Osc) and the signal coupling winding (RF) The LW tuning coil is shorted out in the MW position to kill any resonance effects from that LW circuit affecting MW.
