Sorry to confuse you, Andy. Yes they were 1 inch long size 8 screws - the exclamation mark simply denotes my surprise at being sold imperial sized screws in the Netherlands. As to why, I have no idea and, if I went back to that shop today - assuming it still exists - I doubt I'd find anybody there who would have a clue about what happened 56 years ago!
