Craig, if you look back through this thread, I think you will find that any bitterness is only aimed at other peoples' cats despoiling their gardens. We are lucky, as we've never had much trouble with visiting cats nor complaints about our own.
When we first moved here, our cat found her way out of the back garden and vanished for several hours! So we started searching for her and discovered something strange. There is a very high hedge at the back of out garden and, while investigating the gap that she had obvious got through, realised that there was another hedge only a few feet away! We live at No. 2, so we went to the end of the road to investigate. We turned up the main road, where most houses have drives with run down the side of the house - except that the first one we came to just continued on for a very long way! In fact, until it gets to the gardens of the houses in the next turning off our road!
We knocked on the door, explained our problem and asked if we could go and investigate. Certainly, he said, so off we went. What I noticed, though, was that, apart from our hedge, all the other hedges on either side had wire mesh embedded in them, so no way could she have got into anybody else's garden. At the end, this 'lane' opened out and there were a couple of dilapidated sheds. My wife called out and the puss emerged from behind one of the sheds.
So, she often disappears through the gap in our hedge but we know that she can't get into anybody else's garden. In fact, we know where she does her business - under an overhanging hedge in front of our side fence, so not anywhere where anybody can tread!
