Was the reservoir perhaps fed from a ram pump?
There were some domestic water feed ram pumps in the Yorkshire dales and moors. One near Clapham as you walk up to Ingleborough is stilll banging away. There are some others Ive heard from time to time but I dont recall just now where they are located.
