Hi,

What a lovely hide away David and all so neat. I can just see you spending many hours in there in total harmony with yourself; have you tidied up before taking the pictures because it would be a shame to have a session on the lathe and mess it all up again.

As a wood turner the band-saw really is a must for roughing out blanks and how does the lathe perform on the wooden bench?

Thanks for adding this interesting thread and I'm sure it will encourage others to either build a shed or spend time making their shed more homely. Does Jennifer bring you a pot of tea and biscuit out?

Actually, it's not all that neat - I didn't show the rest of it, and I cropped the picture! The bandsaw is just a cheapo Clarke one I've had for years, for little jobs up to about 2" thick. I've got a larger one with a 6" capacity and 12" thorat - nothing like your impressive monster. Bandsaws are one thing where size does matter!

The lathe came with very substatial hollow legs that you can fill with lead shot or concrete, but I wanted to sit it on my bench, so the legs are unused. The lathe bed is cast iron and bolted down onto the bench. If I'm roughing out an uneven piece of timber and the lathe starts to protest, I slow it down, and although it has a 16" capacity, I rarely turn anything larger than 10" so it's not a problem.

And yes, Jennifer does pop out with tea and biscuits, usually at an inopportune moment just before I get the vac on to hoover up all the shavings when I'm turning something. The door swings open and when she claps eyes on me it usually ellicits comments such as 'Good grief, just look at the state of you - you look like a cross between Wursel Gummidge and Fred Dibnah - it's all in your hair - everywhere'.

Can't argue with that!
