That happened to me.
The little metal clip came off the back of the head light switch causing the contacts to close into the metal stem filling the car with smoke.
I managed to shove the remains of the switch back in to clear the short before the car burned to a crisp.
The Simca 1100 was powered by the Chrysler castanet engine so you got a 3 minute warning that one was going to pass by
