Never ever had a broken spring on proper Skoda's, it was a common problem on the Rover 75 the diesel being the worst.
Cars with the infamous McPherson strut will always be worse as the spring is right in the path of road debris, a decent front suspension with wishbones has the spring mounted inboard of the Kingpin or balljoints so is less likely to be attacked by road debris.
2CV Citroen's never break springs and those with torsion bars last well too.
