Terry, I am not sure that is correct, the rumour of pirates interfering with marine radio was I think propaganda put out by the government who wanted to discredit the very popular pirates to try and turn the public against them.
I would think if RNI were broadcasting on 1605kHz then yes it may interfere with the amateur "top band", but the "trawler band" was above the top band as far as I remember, I know the international distress and calling frequency was 2182 kHz and it went up to near 3MHz that is about all I can remember.
The marine navigation DF stations were all on frequencies between LW and MW so again probably unlikely to be effected.
