Ah - mystery solved 
Not quite the same, but once I found a Mayflower with no solder on one of the joints on the bulb holder. The wire had been neatly twisted around the tag as expected - it was just completely missed by the person with the soldering iron. Despite the tag and wire being very tarnished, the lamp worked perfectly!
I guess we've all done something similar - we're all human after all
