They were different engines.
The bell housing and balance shaft gear covers were the other way around.
The gear box was like a transverse engine one with the input and output shafts at the same end with the diff in the bell housing.
Both the Saab and Tournus were inline engine with front wheel drive. I have found an under side view of one clearly showing the rear axle. I have added a screen shot because the link is at risk of going for a walk.
