Hi.
Well there is much about the British and German V4's online and the specs have no inference as to a rotational difference. The balance shaft though has a pulley on the front of the British engine which as far as I know drove the generator and water pump which ran anti clockwise.
To land up with 4 reverse gears would mean that the transaxle had been opened and the diff was replaced the wrong side of the pinion shaft, in other words 180 degrees out.
