My dad once advised me, dilute your clock oil in petrol, probably 50:50 then dab a tiny drop on with a jewellers screwdriver onto each pinion, and brush around the gear teeth, being careful to not leave any bristles.
That way you always put on less than you think as the petrol will evaporate.
But I am not an expert.

Does IPA dissolve mineral oil?
