To some extent PFC correction in SMPS is a bit of a con. Yes, the current is in phase with the voltage but it's usually a narrowish pulse hence plenty of harmonics.
DC power distribution in data centres has some advantages. Probably not as great as proponents claim. If, like Nick, you're using on line UPS, there is no need for the inverter part at all. The batteries simply feed all the loads directly and the UPS just floats the batteries on charge.

PS: Nick, would it be possible to split this discussion on UPS, data centres etc away from the Museum thread please. It's an interesting topic in its own right but I'd prefer to keep this thread for the Museum.
