I must say that I've never seen an ECC88 as standard fitting in a VHF FM front end. I used one initially a few years back when I had run out of ECC85's purely as a trial. As the original ECC85 was completely U/S at that time there was no benchmark for a comparison. Once I got a few 85's NOS, it was plain to see the 88 was a plug and play substitution with improved results and with the biggest gains at the HF end of the band.
