I suppose the time scopes became essential in the domestic service trade was when colour TV arrived. Aligning and fautlfinding a decoder without a scope isn't possible. Not if you're doing it properly. In much R&D scopes were essential from the day they were invented. In the military I suspect that scopes were essential for radar technicians right back to WW2.
