I know i am reviving an old thread here, but i do have some input!
Two issues with the tapered spline system; i have seen two sizes in use on my travels, and the smaller one is quite puny.
The other issue is the arms as supplied have no splines, and as you have said, the steel spline digs it's own channels in the alloy.
On initial fitment i have found that having nipped up the nut and crinkle washer, a slightly oversize socket placed over the nut and given a judicious thump with a 1lb hammer, ensures that the process succeeds. I have known for the arms to work loose over the years/decades, so have got into the habit with my Cavalier of repeating the 'socket tap' every few years.
It's hard to know whether to use copaslip initially or not; i use a very small amount.
