This paper gives rather different figures for embodied carbon. Much more favourable.

Don't forget that fossil fuel power stations have embodied carbon too. Plus the mining/tankering/pipelining etc costs of the fuel. Nuclear has embodied carbon plus mining, refining etc.
This sort of calculation isn't at all obvious or easy.
Let's take buying a new boiler, other than as a distress purchase. I replaced an old cast iron Potterton with a condensing Veissmann. I did it myself, total cost about £1200 which included the pipework etc costs of moving to a different position in the house. Estimated payback time 4 to 6 years on gas saving. Embodied carbon? Unknown.
Or a new fridge, again not a distress purchase. I strongly suspect this pays back very quickly indeed if you have an older one. Without figures to hand I can see this saving £30 to £100 per year, depending on how bad your old fridge is. Payback time usually acceptable. Embodied carbon? Unknown. General note: Keeping an old fridge running as an overflow/beer store is likely to be expensive on the leccy bill.
