Very little coal now being burnt to make electricity in the UK. Much more wind coming on stream like this one today: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-no...d-43713529 Every kWh of wind or solar energy means that much gas not being burned. Grid scale storage now coming out of prototype stage so we can use wind and solar more effectively with less reliance on gas backup. Electric cars are very much part of this. A hydrogen based economy would use renewables and store energy for later use.
Nuclear might be nice if could actually build them for a sensible price and timescale. Don't hold your breath. Fusion would be even nicer. It's been about 30 years in the future for a long time. We have a very nice fusion reactor at a safe distance, almost 100 miillion miles. It provides 100 million tiimes more energy falling on earth than we need, all we have to do is be clever enough to harvest a tiny fraction of it. http://www.alternative-energy-tutorials....ation.html
