For better of worse all modern cars are festooned with sensors. From tyre pressure measurement to lambda (measuring exhaust gas oxygen content). If any of them fail the effects are not always obvious. A wheel sensor (don't know what type) failed when I had a VW Golf. Besides the ABS warning light doing odd things it mucked up the gear changes on the DSG automatic. When the camshaft sensor on the same car failed the engine warning light came on but otherwise all seemed OK. Except that the engine wouldn't start when hot but would start when cold. You'd have thought that the engine management software could have coped rather better than that.
Going back a number of years, it took a lot of development to keep electronics working reliably in the harsh environment of a car. Vibration, spikes on the power, large temperature range, muck and water. It's probably nearer to military requirements than domestic.
