Nick, I don't think Jeffrey meant collecting vintage fluorescent tubes as you have interpreted it but stocking up on modern tubes to keep existing fittings supplied for as long as they are required.
Of course, if Jeffrey's idea becomes widespread, we'll be hearing and reading about the great fluorescent tube shortage by this time next week!
I remember the sugar shortage of 1974. We spent a holiday on the Belgian coast and bought a few kilo packs to come home with us in our daughter's pram! Talking to our landlady, she couldn't understand it as sugar was in plentiful supply but salt - she couldn't get salt for love nor money!
When we came back, Helen decided to buy a packet of salt and send it to here - she'd been very good to us during our stay and insisted on babysitting every night so that we could go out and enjoy ourselves!
When she couldn't find salt in the local supermarket, Helen approached one of the staff who looked at her as if she'd just landed from another planet! We'd only been away for a week ...
Then there was the great toilet roll shortage. My mother in law couldn't understand this as there were no problems in NE Scotland, where they lived.
For a while, any time they wanted to send us something, it always turned up in oversized boxes with toilet rolls for packing!
